CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-The Boston College women's ice hockey team lost, 4-3, to the University of Connecticut on Sunday at Kelley Rink. With the loss, BC drops to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the ECAC, while Connecticut improves to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the ECAC. Kelly McManus led the Eagles with two goals.
The Eagles came out firing in the first period against a young Connecticut team, playing their first season in the ECAC. BC took the first four shots of the game and if not for the tremendous play of the Huskies' goalie, Samantha Dexter, the Eagles could have led by one or two. Connecticut weathered the storm and slowly the team began to get into the game. Two ill-advised penalties from the home team gave the Huskies a 5 on 3 power play. BC did well to kill off the first penalty, but the visitors would not fail on the one-player advantage. At 15:36, defense Stefanie Snow snapped a sharp-angle shot off of BC goaltender Lisa Davis and into the net, giving UConn the lead at the first intermission.
The coaches fired up the Eagle squad during the first intermission, and BC did not take long to knot the score. Just 44 seconds into the second period, McManus received a terrific breakout pass from defense Jessica Tychsen and went in all alone. She faked a forehand shot, put the puck on her backhand and lifted it over the blocker side of Dexter.
The Eagles continued to play with confidence and at the 9:37 mark, they took the lead when senior captain Missy Barsz pounced on a rebound off a Thia Connolly shot and found the back of the net.
The Huskies did not take long to regroup, tying the score only 17 seconds later when Sarah Clark redirected a centering pass from Julie Marashio through the legs of Davis. Allison Oropallo also received an assist on the goal.
BC would not be outdone in the second period and again it was McManus being the catalyst. She received a pass from Alaina Clark and fired it past the outstretched arms of Dexter to give the Eagles the 3-2 lead at 14:33 of the second frame. The second period ended with the Eagles leading by one goal.
The third period would belong to the Huskies and BC did not help itself, taking untimely penalties. At 6:01 of the final frame, Huskies' center Kimberly Berry, who had been thwarted on a breakaway chance only moments earlier, found herself alone in front of the net and fired a shot under the arm of Davis and into the net.
The Huskies would make the final move, when Tiffany Owens stuffed a wrap-around shot between Davis and the goal post, at 12:29. BC tried to mount a comeback, but a penalty call for hooking took away any momentum they had. The game ended 4-3.
Connecticut outshot the Eagles 33 to 29 for the game. Dexter registered the win making 26 saves and Davis earned the loss with 29 saves.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, November 3 against the Niagara Purple Eagles at Kelley Rink. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
