CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Prior to the start of the 2001 season, the Boston College men's and women's cross country teams goals were fairly simple. For the men, it looked to improve on its sixth-place finish at the 2000 BIG EAST Championship, while for the women, it looked to defend its 2000 BIG EAST Championship. Both teams will have the opportunity to achieve these goals, as they will run in the 2001 BIG EAST Championship on Friday at Van Cortland Park.
The women's 6,000-meter race will take place at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 11:10 a.m.
Senior Colin Wolfe, who looks to improve on his 31st-place finish at last year's championship, will lead the men's team this year. He has been the highest finisher in all three races this year, which includes a 12th-place result at the Boston College Invitational back on September 18. He has also finished 21st at the Iona College Meet of Champions and an 18th-place result at the New England Championship.
Defending BIG EAST Champion Providence College, who is ranked No. 8 in the most recent Mondo Cross Country Poll, and the University Notre Dame, who enters the events as the highest ranked BIG EAST team in the country at No. 5, are the favorites at this year's meet.
The Boston College women's cross country team, which enters ranked No. 5 in the country in the most recent FinishLynx Women's Cross Country Poll, will be vying for its second-consecutive title, but the competition will be stiff for the Eagles. Looking to knock off the Eagles is No. 3 Georgetown University and No. 8 Providence. Georgetown took first place in the Purple 6K race at the NCAA Pre-Championship meet back on October 13. Providence defeated Boston College back on September 18 at the Boston College Invitational. Even though the Eagles were without two of their top runners, Providence is still a major threat to take the 2001 BIG EAST title.
2000 All-America runners Cate and Maggie Guiney will lead the women team on Friday. In her two meets this season, Cate finished first at the Iona College Meet of Champions and second in the Silver 6K event at the NCAA Pre-Championship meet. Maggie has turned in a second (Iona), third (Boston College Invitational) and eighth-place (NCAA Pre-Championship) finish this year. Freshman Maria Cicero will also be a threat at this year's meet. In her first collegiate meet, she took home a first-place finish at the Boston College Invitational.
