CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.-The Boston College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of Vermont, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Kelley Rink. Senior Captain Missy Barsz scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Eagles. With the win, BC improves to 1-0-0 and Vermont falls to 0-2-0.
The Eagles came out strong for their first game of the season, peppering Catamount goaltender Tiff Hayes with 18 shots in the first period. BC opened the scoring at the 1:00 mark when junior defense Gen Richardson fired a shot from the point that found its way past a screened Hayes. Junior assistant captain Kelly McManus and sophomore Alaina Clark registered the assists on the goal.
BC would continue to mount the pressure, but Hayes stood strong, robbing McManus on a nifty backhand shot at the 13:00 minute mark. The pressure finally paid off at 15:46 of the first, as a perfect outlet pass from Barsz set Thia Connolly in alone. The sophomore speedster faked a forehand shot, pulled the puck around the out-stretched arms of the helpless Vermont 'tender, and backhanded it into the net. Barz was credited with the lone assist on the goal.
The second period saw BC continue to exert its dominance, but Hayes continued to shine, stopping 17 Eagle shots. BC was able to finally collect an insurance goal late in the third period. At 11:52 of the third, with the Eagles crashing the net on a shot from the point, Vermont's Jillian Giardina was whistled for freezing the puck in the crease and BC was awarded the penalty shot. Barsz would not dissapoint on the attempt, faking a wrist shot and backhanding the puck under Vermont backup goalie Kami Cote for the final tally.
The Eagles dominated the shots for the game, outshooting Vermont, 47 to seven.
Collecting the win for Boston College was freshman Lisa Davis. Davis saved seven shots in 60:00 of play and picked up her first career win along with her first career shutout.
The Eagles will return to action on Sunday, October 28 against the Connecticut Huskies at Kelley Rink. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
