Women's Hockey Hangs Close To Providence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.-- The Providence College defeated Boston College, 4-3, in women's hockey non-conference action on Mon., Jan. 8 in the consolation round of the Lake Placid Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Coming out strong, the Friars scored their first goal of the game at 16:44. The Providence goal was scored by Jessica Taba and was assisted by Kim Mathias and Val Bono. Thirty-eight seconds later the Eagles rallied back when Kelly McManus scored the first of her two goals at 17:52. Assisting on the goal were Gen Richardson and Alaina Clark.
With less than a minute remaining before intermission, the Eagles jumped ahead scoring with 39 seconds left in the second period. McManus- as the team's leading scorer- scored her second goal of the game, 10th of the season. Assisting again were Richardson and Clark. Heading into the locker room for the second break, the Eagles held a 2-1 lead, despite being out shot 35 to 13 by the Friars.
Rallying back, Providence tied the game at the 12:04 mark in the third period on a Jennifer Kranz goal, assisted by Erin Cannon and Danielle Gulgin. Just over five minutes later, Providence took the lead of the game. The goal scored with 6:59 remaining by Meridith Roth was assisted by Mathias and Taba. The Proviednce fourth goal, which would later become the game winner, was scored with 2:36 left in regulation by Mathias and assisted by Jenn Butsch and Darlene Stephenson. Two seconds later Boston College scored the third and what would prove to be the last goal of the game, by Missy Barsz. Assisting on her third goal of the day was Clark.
The Friars out shot the Eagles 50 to 19.
In goal for Boston College was junior Sharon Van Tuyl who collected 16 saves. In goal for the Providence College was Crystal Nicholas collecting 16 saves.
In the Championship game of the Lake Placid Tournament, the US National Team defeated seventh-ranked University of Wisconsin, 4-0.
The Eagles will resume league play Fri. Jan. 12 when they host the University of Maine at 7:00 at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
