CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College jumped out to a 4-0 second-period lead and held on to defeat Boston University 5-2 in front of a sellout crowd of 7,770 at Kelley Rink. The two teams split the weekend home-and-home series. BU defeated BC 3-2 the previous night.
Boston College scored two first-period goals, the first coming from HOCKEY EAST's leading scorer, sophomore forward Krys Kolanos at 11:11. BC would double the lead when freshman center Ben Eaves scored on the power play at the 14:53 mark of the first period.
Senior captain Brian Gionta, who was moved to the right wing from the left side before the game, scored two goals in a span of 3:21 mid-way through the second period to extend the lead to 4-0. The first score came off of a pass from freshman Tony Voce, who was able to center the puck despite making the pass from his knees.
Boston University (7-10-1, 5-5-1) would get on the board at the 16:11 mark of the second period, when Brian Collins tallied a power-play goal to make the score 4-1. The Terriers would score their second power-play goal of the game at 11:37 of the final period, but freshman J. D. Forrest's empty-net, shorthanded goal with 1:06 remaining in the game sealed the victory for the Eagles.
Boston College goaltender Scott Clemmensen turned away 26 Terrier shots on the night for the victory. BU's Jason Tapp made 24 saves.
Second-ranked Boston College (14-5-1, 7-2-1) returns to action on Friday, January 12, when it travels to Lowell to face HOCKEY EAST opponent UMass Lowell. Game time is 7 p.m.
