The Game
Boston College enters Saturday's game after losing its conference game at Syracuse on Wednesday, 66-48, marking its lowest offensive output of the season. Currently the Eagles are 8-10 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST play.
The Eagles opened the season with two wins in the Chevrolet Classic before dropping a game to No. 3 Duke at home. BC improved to 3-1 with a road win over Holy Cross, but dropped its next two to No. 5 Purdue and No. 2 Tennessee. The Eagles earned two wins over La Salle and Dartmouth. BC lost to Kent State on the road, before defeating Buffalo at home. BC fell to Fairfield in overtime at home to end the millenium, but then opened the BIG EAST season with a win over St. John's on Jan. 2. The team dropped four in a row to Georgetown, Miami, Rutgers and Virginia Tech but snapped the streak with a win over Providence. The last game was the loss to the Orangewomen.
Two Eagles are scoring in double-figures, led by Becky Gottstein's 15.1 points per game average. Freshman Amber Jacobs is second with a 12.7 average. Gottstein is also the team's leading rebounder with a 8.2 boards per game average. Senior Nicole Conway follows, averaging 6.3 rebounds per game.
Villanova enters the game ranked 24th in the nation by the Associated Press after accumulating a 13-5 overall record. The Wildcats dropped their last game to new league member Virginia Tech, 65-59, in Blacksburg, Va. on Tuesday.
The Wildcats dropped their first game of the season to Penn State, but then won five in a row against Fairfield, Florida International, Georgia State, La Salle and Temple. They suffered back-to-back losses to Notre Dame and St. Joseph's before winning their next seven against Pennsylvania, Bucknell, Howard, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Georgetown and George Washington. Seton Hall snapped the winning streak, but then Villanova topped Rutgers to move into the rankings. Virginia Tech was the team's last opponent.
Two Wildcats are scoring in double figures led by senior Brandi Barnes's 14.4 points per game. Sophomore Trish Juhline is second with a 12.7 average. Barnes also is the team's leading rebounder with a 6.0 rebounds per game mark and Courtney Mix follows with a 5.9 average.
Against Villanova:
Boston College and Villanova have met 33 times in the past with the Wildcats holding the series advantage, 21-12. Last season, the two teams met twice with each team taking a game at home. On Dec. 8, 1999, BC won a game at Conte Forum 65-55 and then later in the season on Feb. 12, 2000, Villanova took the game, 60-59. The two teams have also split the last six meetings with each team taking three apiece. Prior to that stretch, Villanova won four straight games, beginning on Jan. 11, 1995 and running through Feb., 20, 1996. Overall, the Eagles are 7-10 at home against the Wildcats and 5-10 on the road. Villanova also won the only neutral meeting.
Last Time Out:
The Eagles traveled to Syracuse and equaled their worst loss of the season with an 18-point set-back at the hands of the Orangewomen. The two teams battled back and forth early, but a 10-0 run late in the first half gave SU a seven point lead at the half, 30-27. Syracuse extended the lead to as many as 20 in the second half, but the Eagles went on a 12-3 run keyed by eight straight Nicole Conway points to claw within 11 with 7:46 left to play. The Orangewomen went on a 9-2 run in response to post an 18-point lead that put the game out of reach for the Eagles. Becky Gottstein scored 15 for BC and added nine rebounds, while Jamie Cournoyer added 13. Conway also scored in double-figures with 11. Amber Jacobs had a career-high eight assists.
The Last Game Against Villanova - February 12, 2000
Brandi Barnes scored 22 points, including the final six of the game, and added 12 rebounds to lead Villanova to a 60-59 victory over Boston College on Feb. 12 in the Eagles' final BIG EAST Television game of the season. The Wildcats overcome a five-point deficit and held the Eagles scoreless for the final 5:44. Trish Juhline had 15 points, all on 3-pointers, and Nicole Druckenmiller added 13 for Villanova. Jamie Cournoyer led Boston College with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Brianne Stepherson added 14 points.
Boston College trailed for most of the first half, but a basket by Kim Mackie at the 6:11 mark gave the Eagles a 26-25 lead. A three-pointer by Barnes gave Villanova a 35-34 lead at halftime. Villanova shot 50 percent in the first half and Boston College connected on 58.3 percent from the field. Barnes scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Cournoyer scored six points during a Boston College 9-0 run that gave the Eagles a 59-54 lead with 5:44 left in the game. The Eagles were held scoreless for the final five minutes. Barnes scored the final two baskets with the game-winner on a rebound of a missed jumper with 2:41 left. The Eagles had a final opportunity, but Cal Bouchard missed a jumper with 4.8 seconds remaining.
Notes: Three of the starters (Alissa Murphy, Bouchard, and Stepherson) played all 40 minutes in the loss...Bouchard scored nine points, snapping her nine-game streak of scoring in double figures...Jamie Cournoyer tied her season-high of 12 rebounds and registered her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points.
