SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Boston College women's basketball team's woes caught back up with them, dropping a 66-48 contest to Syracuse in BIG EAST action. Limited to only nine dressed players, the Eagles were down at the half by seven, 30-23, and watched as the Orangewomen opened the second half with an offensive spurt to put the game out of reach.
BC got on the board first as Becky Gottstein scored the first of her 10 first-half points on a turn-around jumper. In what would turn out to be a back and forth battle in the early minutes, SU's Beth Record netted her first basket to even the score. Both teams traded baskets early and, with the Eagles holding a 13-12 lead after a Rachel Byars score, Syracuse went on a 10-0 run over the next 4:47 to take a 22-13 lead with 6:29 left in the half. The two teams again traded scores and Gottstein's layup with 1:06 left gave SU a seven-point lead after the first 20:00.
In the first half, all 23 of BC's points were scored by forwardcourt players. Gottstein led with 10 and Jamie Cournoyer added eight. Conway had three and Rachel Byars chipped in a basket. Both Record and Leah Aziz had eight for the Orangewomen.
Syracuse opened the second half with a 9-3 run that extended the lead to 16 with 16:00 left to play. The Eagles added a basket to bring the margin back to 14, but SU's Julie McBride netted a three-pointer and completed a three-point play to open a 20-point advantage. BC answered with a 12-4 run, highlighted by eight-straight Conway points, to get back within 11 with 7:46 left. However, SU picked up its defense and regained an 18-point advantage to close the game.
Although only shooting 28.6 percent in the second half, Syracuse was able to outscore the Eagles by netting four three pointers and 12 free throws.
For the game, the Eagles were led by Gottstein's 15 points and nine rebounds. Cournoyer added 13 and Conway netted 11. BC's backcourt was held to just four points in the game and was 0-10 on three pointers marking the first time since Dec. 2 1997 that the team was held without a three point basket.
McBride netted 17 points to lead all scores, as Record and Aziz also added 15 for Syracuse. The Orangewomen also out-rebounded the Eagles 52-39, including a 22-11 margin on the offensive end.
With the loss, BC fell to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST play, while Syracuse improved to 9-7 and 3-3 in league play.
Boston College will next face 24th-ranked Villanova at home in Conte Forum on Saturday, Jan. 27 in a 1 p.m. game.
