PROVIDENCE, R. I. - Boston College completed a two-game, weekend sweep of Providence College, defeating the Friars, 4-2, before a sellout crowd at Schneider Arena.
The Eagles opened the game outshooting the Friars 11-1 in the first 7:00, but it wasn't until the 16:44 mark of the opening frame that BC scored its first goal. Freshman forward Chuck Kobasew was credited with a power-play goal that was inadvertently tipped into the net past Providence goaltender Nolan Schaefer by Friar forward Drew Omicioli.
The Eagles went up, 2-0, on a power-play goal by freshman forward Ben Eaves. Gionta assisted on the score. The Eagles went 2-6 with the man advantage on the night, and killed each of Providence's eight power-play opportunities.
Gionta scored the first of his two second-period goals at 11:49, making the score 3-0. For Gionta it was his second three-point game in as many nights. He also tallied two goals and one assist in the Eagles 4-0 blanking of the Friars the previous night.
Providence ended BC goaltender Scott Clemmensen's scoreless streak at the 16:57 mark of the second period. Cody Loughlean beat the senior netminder to cut the Eagles' lead to 3-1. Clemmensen had gone 99:43 without giving up a goal.
Gionta scored his second goal at 18:46 of the second, notching his 16th of the season to give BC a 4-1 lead.
Second-ranked Boston College (17-6-1, 10-3-1) returns to action on Friday, January 26, in the first game of a weekend HOCKEY EAST series with Maine at Kelley Rink. The Eagles defeated the Black Bears, 7-2, in Orono earlier this season. Game time is 7 p.m.
