CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College broke open a close game with three goals in the span of 3:29, midway through the third period, to defeat 10th-ranked Maine, 4-1, before a sellout crowd at Kelley Rink.
Freshman forward Ben Eaves started the scoring for BC, registering a power-play goal at 11:07 of the first period.
Maine (10-8-6, 5-5-4) answered late in the second frame, as Brendan Donovan scored a goal after the puck took a fluke bounce off of the glass behind Eagle goaltender Scott Clemmensen. The senior netminder was forced to make 16 saves in the period.
The Eagles took the lead for good at 8:48 of the final period, as senior forward Mike Lephart skated from the red line and circled the Black Bears net before scoring his 10th goal of the season and his second game-winner this year. Sophomore forward Ales Dolinar registered his second assist of the game on the goal.
Senior forward Marty Hughes took advantage of a misplayed puck by Maine goalie Mike Morrison, shooting it into an empty net to put the Eagles up, 3-1, at 10:28. Sophomore forward Krys Kolanos pushed the lead to 4-1 with a goal 1:49 later.
The scoring outburst was similar to the Eagles 7-2 victory at Maine on Dec. 10 in Orono, when BC scored four goals in 4:27 of the third period to pull away from the Black Bears.
Clemmensen finished the game with 32 saves. Maine's Morrison stopped 31 BC shots.
Second-ranked Boston College (18-6-1, 11-3-1) returns to action on Saturday, January 27, in the second game of a weekend HOCKEY EAST series with Maine at Kelley Rink. Game time is 7 p.m.
