The Track And Field Competes At Dartmouth Relays

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- The Boston College men's and women's track and field teams resumed their 2000-01 season this weekend competing at the Dartmouth relays in Hanover, N. H. on Jan. 12-14. Leading the Eagles were All-Americans Shannon Smith and Maggie Guiney.
Winning the 3000-meter run, Smith finished with 9:28.38, the fastest time to date in the 3000-meters in NCAA division I track times for the 2000-01 season. Finishing with the third best time in the 3000-meter in division I track, Maggie Guiney took second place with a time 9:34, setting a career high. Also in the 3000-meter, sophomore Julie Spolidoro finished in fifth place and freshman Danielle Jelley took seventh.
In the one-mile event, the Eagles dominated the competition. Junior captain Katie Ryan finished first with 4:55. Four seconds later in second place sophomore Cate Guiney finished at 4:59. Taking fourth was Jennifer Kramer and Jennifer Donovan took sixth place.
Taking second place in the pentathlon for the Eagles, sophomore Christina Regan scored 2973 points. Following in eighth place, freshman Julie Heyde collected 2666 points.
In the 55-meter dash, sophomore Nikki Pogue and junior Zoey O'Sullivan finished back-to-back in ninth and tenth place, respectively. Sophomore Melissa Connell took fifth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.93. Finishing in sixth place in the 55-meter hurdles was senior captain Kate Sullivan.
In the field events, senior Kristyn O'Brien finished in fifth place in the pole vault with 10'00". In the long jump, Sullivan finished in fifth place while freshman Katina McCrory took eighth.
In relays, Boston College women's team won the distance relay with 12:03 and took third in the 4x400-meter with 4:06.41.
Winning the men's 800-meter run, Vernon Mickle finished with a time of 1:57. Junior Michael McKenzie followed as the next Eagle finisher in eighth place. In the 400-meter senior captain Mark Johnson finished in sixth place with a time of 50.96 followed by sophomore Matt Greene in ninth. Taking ninth place in the 3000-meters senior Andrew Shaffer finished in ninth place. In the 55-meter hurdles freshman Keith Normant took 10th place.
In field events junior Tony Bierne finished in seventh place in both the shot put and the 35 pound weight throw.
In the men's pentathlon, sophomore Gabe Verdaguer was the top scoring Eagle with 3076 points and 10th place.
In relay events, the men's team won the distance medley, took third in the 4x400 and finished seventh in the 4x200 relays.
The Eagles will next compete at the New England Challenge Final on Sat. Jan. 20 at Brown University. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
