NEW YORK - Omar Cook had 19 points, 13 assists and made every big play St. John's needed down the stretch as the Red Storm beat No. 24 Boston College 73-71 Wednesday night, knocking the Eagles from the ranks of the undefeated.
Cook's 3-pointer with 34 seconds left gave the Red Storm (8-6, 2-1 Big East) the lead for good, 72-69. Troy Bell rebounded Xavier Singletary's missed 3 with 21 seconds left to bring the Eagles (11-1, 2-1) within one point.
Cook was fouled with 17 seconds left and made the second of the free throws for a 73-71 lead. Bell, who finished with 23 points, brought the ball down for the Eagles and after two passes, Kenny Harley went up for a shot at the top of the key with two seconds left, but Cook knocked the ball away to seal the win.
Boston College had the best start to a season in school history snapped and now only No. 1 Stanford and No. 12 Georgetown are still unbeaten.
Alpha Bangura and Anthony Glover each had 14 points for St. John's, which has won four of five overall and now has a seven-game winning streak over the Eagles. Willie Shaw added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Red Storm, who finished with a 43-32 rebound advantage.
Singletary, who was 0-for-7 from 3-point range, added 13 points for Boston College, which last beat St. John's on Feb. 9, 1997.
Neither team led by more than five points over the final 10 minutes.
The Red Storm struggled from the free throw line, finishing 16-for-28, but they made five of six over the final 4:23. Boston College made 17 of its first 18 free throws and then missed four its last nine over the final 5:22.
