Chestnut Hill, Mass - The Boston College volleyball team put up a tremendous fight against non-conference opponent Purdue tonight, but in the end fell victim to the Boilermakers in three straight games 16-14, 15-8 and 19-17. The match was the Eagles' first of the 2000 New England Challenge, hosted by BC, Harvard and Northeastern.
Sophomore Rachel Bach (Jacksonville, Fla.) recorded 23 kills in the match for the Eagles (1-4 overall), leading all players, and she also added 13 digs. Meanwhile, BC senior setter Kyleen Charlton (Tampa, Fla.) led all players with 52 assists. Joanna Lowry had 18 kills and Melissa Risher had 44 assists for Purdue (6-1 overall).
The Eagles jumped out to an early 8-5 advantage in the first game before Purdue stormed back to take a 14-11 lead. The Eagles answered immediately, however, tying it up at 14-14 before the Boilermakers took the lead and, subsequently, game one.
Game two began in tough fashion for BC, with the Boilermakers pouncing to a quick 12-3 lead. Eagles head coach Jackie Hadel inserted substitute Michelle LaMothe (Meriden, Conn.) to serve and the move paid off, as LaMothe served the Eagles to within 12-8. Purdue rattled off three straight points after a side-out, however, and took game two 15-8.
Game three proved to be another nail-biter for the Eagles. It all began with BC storming out of the gates to take a 7-0 lead. After going up 10-3, Purdue mounted a comeback, tying it all up at 12-12. BC had game point at 14-12 but was unable to capitalize, and the teams then exchanged points and sideouts before Purdue stole the game 19-17.
Boston College will play two matches tomorrow as part of the New England Challenge. The Eagles will take on Lamar in the early match at 1 p.m. Later, the Eagles will look for revenge when they face Purdue in a rematch at 7 p.m.
