SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore forward Casey Schmidt's goal in the fourth minute of play was all Boston College needed to defeat BIG EAST Conference rival Seton Hall, 3-0, in South Orange, N.J. The win lifted the Eagles to 4-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the BIG EAST.
Junior Chris Cleary sent a pass in from the right win to Schmidt who scored on a shot to the lower left corner, past Pirate keeper Alex McDonald. Schimdt's tally extended his scoring streak to four games, a career high for the Newbury Park, Calif. native.
Boston College's win snapped Seton Hall's 15-game unbeaten streak at their home field and gave the Eagles a 3-0 mark in the BIG EAST for the first time since 1995 when they began the season with a 5-0 record in league play.
Seton Hall outshot the Eagles 17-3 in the game, including 7-0 after the half, but Boston College hung onto the lead behind the solid goalkeeping of Chris Hamblin. The senior made five saves in the win and lengthened his shutout streak to three games - all BIG EAST contests. He has yet to allow a goal in conference play in 2000.
The Eagles played a man short for the entire second half after Jorgen Lie received his second yellow card of the match at 43:24. It was the second straight game that a Boston College player was ejected from a match on penalties.
Boston College will next face Rutgers on Friday, September 22, at the Newton Campus Soccer Fields at 4 p.m.
