Boston College's three goals in the first half of play gave the visiting Eagles a 3-0 victory over Providence College at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. in BIG EAST Conference play. Sophomore Bobby Thompson scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Eagles. Freshman Adam Pfeifer added two assists in the game.
Sophomore Casey Schmidt opened the scoring in the 18th minute, scoring off a corner. Senior Sjur Gundersen crossed the ball in front of the net to set up the play and Schmidt knocked in the ball for a 1-0 Eagle lead. The goal gave Schmidt a three-game scoring streak - the first of his career. Thompson, who earlier in the game had had two point blank scores robbed by Friar keeper Danny Glynn, made good on his third attempt in the 33rd minute. Taking a backfield pass form Pfeifer, Thompson dribbled up-field, faked a defender and netted the score.
Boston College's last score came in the 43rd minute when freshman Ramon Smith scored off a scrum in front of the net. Thompson passed off the ball in the melee. Pfeifer drew a long ball downfield to set up the score.
Eagle keeper Chris Hamblin made two saves in the win - his second shutout of the year. Hamblin has not allowed a goal in BIG EAST action yet in 2000. Glynn made six saves in the loss.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST play. Boston College next faces Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
