The Boston College men's soccer team dropped its 2000 season opener, 1-0, to Stony Brook at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The Seawolves' Jamie Gaither scored the games only goal in the 12th minute off an Everett Watt's rebound to net the game-winner.
In a physical game that featured 35 fouls and eight yellow card warnings, the Eagles outshot Stony Brook 18-14, including eight shots in the game's final minutes.
Freshman forward Adam Pfeifer held two outstanding scoring chances in the game's second half. At the 63rd minute, Pfeifer launched a shot from the top of the box past the Stony Brook keeper, only to have it saved at the last minute by defenseman Jermaine Wright. His second opportunity in the 83rd minute, amid a heavy Eagle flourish, found a line behind Seawolf goalkeeper Dan Ferrin, but was kept out of the net by the crossbar as it sailed high.
Boston College senior goalkeeper Chris Hamblin made three saves in the loss, including a point blank stop on Watts in the first half. Ferrin made five saves in the victory and earned his first career shutout.
Stony Brook opened the season at 1-0. The Eagles's record fell to 0-1 and they will return to action on Sunday, Sept.3, when they face cross-town rival Boston University at 2:30 p.m. at the Newton Campus fields.
