Dwayne Pina, a senior guard on the Boston College basketball team, will miss the 2000-01 season -- his final season of eligibility -- because of a cardiomyopathy.
Cardiomyopathy is a structural or functional abnormality of the heart muscle that causes a weakening of the heart and results in its inability to pump blood efficiently.
"I'm saddened that my playing career had to end this way," Pina said. "I was looking forward to one more year in an Eagle uniform, but the reality is the reality."
Pina joined the basketball team as a walk-on prior to the 1997-98 season, and has played in 78 games over the past three seasons. Pina earned an athletic scholarship midway through the 1997-98 season.
In his three seasons, Pina played in 78 games, making 38 starts. He averaged 2.5 points, 2.6 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game. In 1998-99, he played in and started all 27 of the Eagles' games. He averaged 4.5 assists per game that season, ranking seventh among BIG EAST Conference leaders.
Without Pina, Boston College will return nine lettermen from the 1999-2000 team that finished with an 11-19 record (3-13 BIG EAST).
