CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sixteen BIG EAST Conference games and non-conference contests against Vanderbilt and Duke highlight Boston College's 2000-01 men's basketball schedule. The schedule was released today by Boston College director of athletics Gene DeFilippo.
After a November 13 exhibition contest, the Eagles will open their season against St. Peter's in Conte Forum on November 19. Nine of BC's first 10 contests are home games. The lone early-season road contest is a Dec. 17 game against Massachusetts in the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. This season will mark the sixth annual Commonwealth Classic. Last year, Massachusetts retained the classic crown with a 74-65 win over the Eagles in Conte Forum. BC defeated the Minutemen, 83-59, in the Puerto Rico Holiday Classic in Bayamon, P.R., less than three weeks later.
Boston College will host Connecticut in its BIG EAST opener on January 3. Connecticut returns two starters from last year's team that won 25 games and earned a NCAA tournament berth.
Boston College will play 16 league contests in 2000-01. The BIG EAST Conference will consist of two seven-team divisions. Each team will meet each divisional opponent on a home-and-home basis, and will play four games -- two at home and two on the road -- against teams from the other division. Joining Boston College in its division are Connecticut, Miami, Providence, St. John's, Villanova and Virginia Tech. In games against cross-division opponents, BC will meet Rutgers and Syracuse at home and Notre Dame and West Virginia on the road.
Highlighting the non-league schedule is a December 30 home game against Vanderbilt and a January 16 road contest against Duke. Vanderbilt and BC met last winter, with the Commodores taking a 76-58 victory in Nashville, Tenn. The Eagles last faced Duke during the 1990-91 season, with the Blue Devils gaining a 100-76 win in Durham, N.C.
