Three returning Boston College hockey players -- defenseman Brooks Orpik, forward Krys Kolanos and defenseman Bill Cass -- were selected in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft that was held in Calgary, Alberta on June 24-25.
Orpik was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round (18th overall), while Kolanos was taken with the next pick -- 19th overall -- by the Phoenix Coyotes. Cass was selected by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the fifth round (153rd overall).
With Orpik and Kolanos both being chosen in the first round, Boston College joined Michigan State as the only schools in NHL Entry Draft history to have two players selected in the first round. Two Spartans -- Michael Stewart (13th) and Brian Smolinski (21st) were chosen in the opening round of the 1990 draft.
Orpik, a 6-foot, 3-inch defenseman who just completed his sophomore season at Boston College, registered 10 points -- one goal and nine assists -- in 38 games in 1999-2000. He missed three games during the season while playing with Team USA in the IIHF World Junior Championship in Sweden.
Kolanos, a 6-foot-2-inch forward, earned HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team honors in 1999-2000, tallying 32 points -- 16 goals and 16 assists -- in his freshman season. For Kolanos, the draft was made a little "extra special" since it was being held in his hometown.
Cass, a 5-foot, 11-inch defenseman, played in 41 games as a freshman in 1999-2000. He registered nine points -- one goal and eight assists.

Joe Mullen, a two-time collegiate All-America selection who played at Boston College from 1975-79, was recently elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Mullen will be inducted on Monday, November 13 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The Induction Weekend (November 10-12) will also feature the Second Annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game, with the Toronto Maple Leafs facing off against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday, November 11. Any Eagle fans/alumni in the area will get a chance to check on former Eagle and current Maple Leaf Jeff Farkas in that game.
