Hanover, N.H. - - Boston College surrendered nine runs in the sixth inning as host Dartmouth College cruised to a 14-8 victory in a battle of the two top-ranked Division 1 squads of New England Tuesday in Hanover. The Big Green, who won 19 of their last 21 games, improved to 29-12 while serving BC only its 15th loss in 46 games (31-15).
The Eagles jumped out to an early 7-1 lead care of home runs by Mike Quirk (Paxton, Mass.), Steve Langone (Reading, Mass.) and Jarett Mendoza (North Dighton, Mass.). However, Dartmouth sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to emerge with the 10-7 lead. BC pitchers issued five walks and surrendered five hits in that frame.
The hosts' James Little, who was 3-for-5 on the day, set a Dartmouth school record for runs in a career (140) with a home run to right center in his first at bat.
Bryn Alderson recorded his first win of the year, working in relief of Brian Gattis. Jon Miller earned his record-setting sixth save of the season, working three hitless innings.
Paul Knapic (Bayside, N.Y.) registered the loss (2-2), allowing eight runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and seven walks in 5.2 innings. Matt Duffey (San Antonio, Texas) walked three and gave up three hits in 1.1 innings.
Including their long balls, Quirk and Mendoza each tallied three hits in the afternoon. Mendoza stole two bases as well. Mike Gambino (Garrison, N.Y.), Joe Kealty (Framingham, Mass.) and Jeff Mackor (Salem, N.H.) each picked up a pair of hits.
