Ryan Sidney, a 6-foot-2-inch guard who played at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Boston College, according to an announcement by Boston College head coach Al Skinner. Sidney will enroll at BC in September 2000 and begin play during the 2000-2001 season.
Sidney earned All-State Class A first team honors as a senior at Pioneer High School. He averaged 22 points, 10 rebounds and six assists per game. The senior shot 54 percent from the field, including 47 percent from three-point range. He led the Pioneers to a 23-3 record in 1999-2000. He played the previous season at Ann Arbor Huron High School.
"There are three elements I think of when I think of Ryan Sidney," Pioneer head coach Brian Townsend said. "First, he's very competitive and plays with a chip on his shoulder. He's going to fight you to the end. Second, he's so strong, but with athleticism. He can really take a hit. And, third, he's very unselfish. He just wants to win."
Townsend also noted that Sidney was elected captain of the 1999-2000 Pioneers, despite the fact he played for rival Huron High School the previous year.
"He's a big-time player," Townsend concluded. "He's clutch, and he understands how to put himself into the position to get things done."
Sidney also played for The Best Seat In The House, an AAU basketball team coached by Marcus Harris.
"We're very pleased that Ryan (Sidney) chose Boston College," Skinner said. "He's a very good all-around player whose versatility will definitely help our team. Ryan is an outstanding defensive player as well."
Sidney is the third recruit to sign with the Eagles. Andrew Bryant, a 6-foot-7-inch, 235-pound forward from Denison (Texas) High School, inked a national letter of intent on April 12. Ludmil "Udo" Hadjisotirov, a 6-foot-2-inch guard who played at the Winchendon (Mass.) School, signed a national letter of intent on April 25.
Boston College will return 10 lettermen from the 1999-2000 team that finished with an 11-19 record (3-13 BIG EAST).
