Four Hockey Players Earn Regional Honors

Four Boston College hockey players - seniors Blake Bellefeuille, Jeff Farkas, and Mike Mottau, and junior Brian Gionta - will be honored at the 2000 New England Hockey Writers Association banquet on April 11.
Mottau, who already captured the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey's top player, earned the New England Writers Award as the Outstanding Defenseman. The senior blueliner registered 43 points - six goals and 37 assists - this past season, leading the Eagles to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament Frozen Four. He finished his final season as the nation's top-scoring defenseman. Mottau concluded his career as Boston College's career assist leader (130) and career scoring leader among defensemen (157 points).
Mottau will also accept the 2000 Walter Brown Award at the banquet. The senior, who was the co-recipient of the 1999 Walter Brown Award, is just the fourth player in history to earn the award twice.
Bellefeuille earned the Frank Jones Award as the region's Best Defensive Forward. The senior from Framingham, Mass., registered a single-season best 51 points this past season - 19 goals and 32 assists. He finished his career with 174 points, 10th on the school's all-time scoring list.
Gionta captured the Herb Gallagher Award as the region's Outstanding Forward. The junior tallied 56 points - 33 goals and 23 assists - in 42 games. His 33 goals ranked second among the nation's Division I players. In three years, Gionta has 178 points - 90 goals and 88 assists.
Farkas was named to the All-New England Team. He is joined on the team by Mottau and Gionta. Farkas led the Eagles in scoring this past season, recording 58 points - 32 goals and 26 assists - in 41 games. He finished his collegiate career tied for fifth on the school's scoring list with 190 points.
Boston College completed the 1999-2000 season with a 29-12-1 record. Boston College defeated Michigan State and Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament's West Regional (Minneapolis, Minn.) to earn its third straight trip to the Frozen Four. After defeating St. Lawrence in the semifinal round, the Eagles lost to North Dakota, 4-2, in the championship game.
