CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College freshman guard Troy Bell captured 1999-2000 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors. The award is voted on by the league's 13 head coaches. Bell received the award at the annual pre-tournament press conference at the Grand Hyatt in New York City.
Bell is the fourth Boston College player to receive this award. The three Eagles who previously captured BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors are Dana Barros (1985-86), Bill Curley (1990-91) and Scoonie Penn (1995-96).
Bell is Boston College's top scorer and the BIG EAST's second-leading scorer, averaging 18.8 points per game. He set a league scoring record for freshmen, averaging 20.1 points in conference games. He also established the Boston College record for points by a freshman with 508. Scoonie Penn, who now plays at Ohio State, previously held the record with 397 points.
Bell played in 27 games, but suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee late in the Eagles' game against Pittsburgh on Feb. 23. He missed the final two games of the regular season, and will not play in the upcoming AT&T BIG EAST Championship Tournament. He underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Friday, March 3.
Bell finished the regular season ranked among league leaders in several categories (conference games only) - scoring (second), three-point field goals made/game (third), free-throw percentage (fourth in league games/first overall), steals (fifth), three-point field goal percentage (11th) and field-goal percentage (15th).
