Softball Starts Slow in Georgia

Columbus, Ga. - The Boston College softball team started its 2000 season against some of the best competition the nation has to offer, and as a result, the Eagles came away from the NFCA Leadoff Classic with an 0-5 record.
On Friday, March 3, the Eagles opened against 19th-ranked Hawaii and dropped a 3-2 decision. Freshman Kimberly Ryan took the loss on the mound, striking out three and walking five. Freshman infielder Cara Blumfield scored both BC runs and had two hits.
Later that afternoon, Boston College fell to fifth-ranked LSU, 14-1, with senior Julie Ulbrich scoring the lone Eagle run. Senior Lauren Fischetti took the loss.
On Saturday, March 4, the Eagles concluded the round-robin portion of play with a tough 3-2 loss to 14th-ranked Michigan. Boston College took a 2-0 lead in the third inning before the Wolverines countered with three runs in the sixth off of Ryan and Brooke Shull.
Boston College finished the tournament on Sunday, March 5 with shutout losses to 17th-ranked Illinois-Chicago (4-0) and the University of Massachusetts (6-0).
Freshman infielder Jennifer Asbury went 6-for-14 (.429) over the weekend to lead the Eagles.
The Eagles will be back in action when they travel to Boston University for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 18.
