STORRS, Conn. (Ticker) - Brianne Stepherson scored 15 points and Alissa Murphy added 14 as No. 18 Boston College posted a 70-53 victory over West Virginia in the first round of the Big East Tournament at Gampel Pavilion.
Stepherson was 4-of-10 from the field and hit 7-of-11 foul shots for the Eagles (24-7), who will face either Syracuse or Georgetown in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Boston College shot only 41 percent (27-of-58) from the field, but held West Virginia (6-22) to just 32 percent (20-of-63).
The Eagles, who posted their third straight victory, were never threatened after opening a 39-24 halftime lead.
The game marked the return of BC's sophomore forward Becky Gottstein, sidelined for six weeks with a stress fracture in her right ankle after leading the conference with 10 rebounds a game.
She finished with nine rebounds and seven points in 19 minutes as the Eagles dominated the boards, 50-30.
Kim Mackie grabbed eight rebounds for Boston College, which maintained a 50-30 edge on the boards.
Val Zona scored 12 points and Brandi Batch and Annie Christin added 10 apiece for West Virginia, which ended the season with a nine-game losing streak.
