BOSTON (AP) - Xavier Singletary scored 9 of his 21 points during a 31-7 run midway through the second half as Boston College stunned Villanova 79-67, severely hurting the Wildcats' NCAA tournament hopes Saturday night.
Michael Cotton added 20 points for the Eagles (11-18, 3-13 Big East) who won for just the second time in 16 games.
The Wildcats (18-11, 8-8) play Sunday's Pittsburgh-Providence winner in the conference tournament's opening round Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. They likely need a few wins to help their chances for a tournament bid.
Gary Buchanan led Villanova with 16 points and Aaron Matthews had 15.
Boston College, the league's last-place finisher, faces fourth-seeded Connecticut Wednesday. The Eagles have dropped their last 22 games against the Huskies, one short of the league record for consecutive losses to one school. Seton Hall lost 23 straight to Syracuse between 1982 and 1992.
The Wildcats seemingly had the game in control, leading 47-38 with just over 13 minutes to go before Cotton scored four straight to trigger a 17-5 Eagles' run.
After Matthews had a basket for Villanova, Boston College scored the game's next 14 points. The Wildcats closed it to 69-63 on Matthews' basket with 2:30 minutes left, but didn't come any closer.
Neither team held more than a four-point lead in the game's opening 15 minutes until the Wildcats used a 13-3 run en route to a 37-27 halftime lead.
