Hockey Advances to Frozen Four

BOSTON COLLEGE HOCKEY NOTES
With its 4-1 win over top-ranked Wisconsin in Saturday night's NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round, Boston College earned its third consecutive berth in the tournament's Frozen Four. Only once before has Boston College made three consecutive Frozen Four appearances. The Eagles advanced in 1948, 1949 and 1950.
In Saturday night's 4-1 win, Boston College's goals were scored by Brian Gionta (two), Blake Bellefeuille and Jeff Giuliano. Bellefeuille opened the scoring with an unassisted, power-play goal at 2:40 of the first period. Wisconsin evened the score at 4:37 - with a power-play goal. Gionta scored the decisive goal at 19:37 of the first period, with junior defenseman Rob Scuderi adding an assist. Giuliano gave BC a 3-1 advantage just 16 seconds into the third period, while Gionta added an empty-net tally with four seconds remaining. The goal was Gionta's 32nd of the 1999-2000 season ... Scott Clemmensen made 28 saves to earn his 18th win of the year.
Senior Blake Bellefeuille captured NCAA Tournament West Regional Most Valuable Player honors. Jeff Farkas and Mike Mottau joined Bellefeuille on the All-Tournament Team. Also on the team were Jeff Panzer (Forward -- North Dakota), Mike Commodore (Defenseman - North Dakota) and Greg Gardner (Goalie - Niagara).
Boston College will meet St. Lawrence in the NCAA Tournament's semifinal round. St. Lawrence defeated Boston University, 3-2, in four overtimes in the tournament's quarterfinal round ... Boston College's five seniors have a 4-0 record against St. Lawrence, including two victories during the 1998-99 season ... BC defeated SLU, 3-2, in the IceBreaker Cup in Minneapolis' Mariucci Arena on Oct. 10, 1998. Farkas, Kevin Caulfield and Chris Masters each scored one goal in the win. BC outshot the Saints, 31-14 ... BC downed host St. Lawrence, 6-2, on Nov. 27, 1998. The Eagles trailed 2-1 entering the final period, but netted five goals in the final 20 minutes to gain the victory. Farkas, Caulfield, Gionta and Mike Lephart each scored one goal for the Eagles, while Chris Masters netted two goals. BC outshot St. Lawrence, 40-27.
