Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Three Boston College hockey players - senior forward Jeff Farkas (Williamsville, N.Y.), junior forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass.) - are among the 10 finalists for the 2000 Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the best player in college hockey.
This marks just the second time that three finalists have come from the same school. In 1994, three University of Michigan players were Hobey Baker finalists.
Farkas ranks among the nation's scoring leaders with 53 points - 28 goals and 25 assists - in 35 games. He set an NCAA single-game season high when he scored five goals in the Eagles' 5-4 win over Vermont on Dec. 30.
Gionta, a two-time All-American who was also a finalist last year, has 49 points - 29 goals and 20 assists - in 36 games. He ranks second nationally in goals scored and leads the Eagles with five game-winning goals.
Mottau, also a two-time All-American, has 38 points - five goals and 33 assists - through 36 games, is the top-scoring defenseman in HOCKEY EAST history. He holds Boston College records for most career points and assists by a defenseman. Mottau is one assist away from tying David Emma's school mark for career assists.
The 2000 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on Friday, April 7, 2000, at the Providence Convention Center at 4 p.m.
