Boston College freshman guard Troy Bell (Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) earned Basketball Times Freshman All-America second team honors, according to an announcement made by the national publication.
Bell, who also captured BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors, finished his rookie season as Boston College's top scorer and the BIG EAST's second-leading scorer, averaging 18.8 points per game. He set a league scoring record for freshmen, averaging 20.1 points in conference games. He also established the Boston College record for points by a freshman with 508. Scoonie Penn, who now plays at Ohio State, previously held the record with 397 points.
Bell played in 27 games, but suffered a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee late in the Eagles' game against Pittsburgh on Feb. 23. He missed the final two games of the regular season and the team's game against Connecticut in the 2000 AT&T BIG EAST Championship Tournament. He underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on Friday, March 3.
Bell finished the regular season ranked among league leaders in several categories (conference games only) -- scoring (second), three-point field goals made/game (third), free-throw percentage (fourth in league games/first overall), steals (fifth), three-point field goal percentage (11th) and field-goal percentage (15th).
Joining Bell on the publication's second team were Gilbert Arenas (Arizona), Joseph Forte (North Carolina), Jason Kapono (UCLA) and Joe Johnson (Arkansas). The first team honorees were Donnell Harvey (Florida), Jason Gardner (Arizona), Casey Jacobson (Stanford), DerMarr Johnson (Cincinnati) and Jason Williams (Duke).
