Women's Tennis Wins Three Flights at Harvard Invitational

The women's tennis team captured three of five flights at the Harvard Invitational held this past weekend in Cambridge, Mass. Juniors Cynthia Tow and Kiren Fernando and sophomore Ruta Vietas each won their respective flights to lead the Eagles at the match.
Tow earned her victory in Flight 1 as the tournament's top seed. On her road to the finals, she won each of her two matches in straight sets and then topped Rebecca Dirksen of Dartmouth, also in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. The win improved her overall record to 17-2 for the season with her only two losses coming to Kavitha Krshnamurthy of Princeton. Overall, Tow has only dropped seven sets all year.
Fernando extended her overall record to 11-4 with her Flight 2 Championship. She topped Chrissy Cerratani of Boston University and Andrea Magyera of Harvard in the first two rounds in straight sets. In the final, she defeated Sanja Bajin of Harvard in a three-set match that included two tiebreakers. She won the match, 6-7, 7-5, 7-6, to win the Flight.
Vietas took a surprising Flight 5 Championship with her straight-set won over Bomy Hong of Harvard, 6-3, 6-4. She also won her first two matches in straight sets. Her overall record for the season is now 2-3.
Other Eagles who competed in the tournament were: seniors Kim Arbuckle (0-1) and Mercedes del Valle (2-1), juniors Angela Niznik (0-2) and Barbara Privrel (2-1), and freshmen Jessica Engle (0-2) and Anisha Fernando (0-2).
Boston College will next compete at the Princeton Invitational on February 18-20 in Princeton, N.J.
