Boston, Mass. - Freshman forward Krys Kolanos registered his first career hat trick and junior goaltender Scott Clemmensen stopped 35 shots for his second straight shutout as Boston College cruised past Northeastern, 6-0, in the opening game of the 48th Annual Beanpot before 17,565 fans at the FleetCenter.
The Eagles (18-7-1), winners of five straight games and seven of their last eight, took a 1-0 first period lead when junior forward Brian Gionta tallied an unassisted shorthanded goal, his 20th of the season.
Boston College then exploded for four second-period goals to put the game away. Senior forward Jeff Farkas found the net at the 2:48 mark with his 20th goal, BC's second shorthanded tally of the night. Sophomore forward Ales Dolinar then put away a feed from Kolanos at 4:28 to make it 3-0. Kolanos then scored his first two goals at 12:41 and 14:31 to give BC a 5-0 lead at the second intermission.
Kolanos finished off the hat trick at 12:20 of the third period, while Clemmensen stopped 13 shots in the final period to finish off his third shutout of the season. The shutout was the eighth of Clemmensen's career, tying the BC career record held by Jack Fitzgerald (1922-25). Clemmensen had blanked Maine, 3-0, in his last start on Jan. 29.
Dolinar and Farkas each finished with one goal and one assist for the Eagles, who will face Providence on Feb. 11 before returning to the FleetCenter to take on the Harvard-Boston University winner in the Beanpot championship on Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. The Eagles will be going after their first Beanpot title since 1994.
