Lowell, Mass. - Junior forward Brian Gionta scored two goals to lead Boston College to a 5-2 victory over UMass-Lowell before a crowd of 3,508 at Tsongas Arena. The win, BC's fourth straight, improves the Eagles to 17-7-1 overall and 10-6-1 in HOCKEY EAST play.
The Eagles got on the board at 7:43 of the first period when senior forward Jeff Farkas scored a shorthanded goal off the rebound of a shot by junior Mike Lephart. Gionta added the first of his two goals at 13:02 to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
After the River Hawks cut the BC lead to one, junior forward Marty Hughes made it 3-1 when he scored the game-winner on the power play at 14:44 of the second period. Sophomore forward Jeff Giuliano scored at 18:53 to make it 4-1 after two periods.
Gionta scored his 19th goal of the season at 9:39 of the third period to make it 5-1 before UMass-Lowell added a goal at 17:14 to close the scoring.
Freshman goalie Tim Kelleher stopped 22 shots to earn the victory for Boston College. Farkas finished with one goal and one assist for the Eagles, while seniors Mike Mottau and Blake Bellefeuille each had two assists.
Boston College will face Northeastern in the opening round of the 48th annual Beanpot on Monday, Feb. 7 at the FleetCenter.
