Three Eagles Crowned New England Track Champions

Three Boston College women's track athletes won the New England Championship at the annual event hosted by the University of Southern Maine this past weekend. Freshmen Kristyn O'Brien in the pole vault (tied for 7th), freshman Jenifer Vendetti and Cate Guiney won the 400M and 3000M respectively and senior co-captain Shannon Smith captured the mile to lead the Eagles to a second-place team finish in the 25-team meet with 94.5 points.
Vendetti took the 400M in a time of 57.24 after running a 57.20 in the preliminaries. Her time was a full second faster than the next competitor and earned 10 points towards the team total.
Guiney won the 3000M in 9:44.03, her fastest time in that event this year. Her twin sister, Maggie, earned third-place honors in the same event with her time of 9:54.87. The next competitor was seven seconds behind her.
Smith won the mile in 4:55.78 for her second New England Championship in two years. Last year, she won the 3000M. Sophomore Katie Ryan followed Smith in second with a 4:56.22.
Several other Boston College Athletes scored for the Eagles, including: freshman Nikki Pouge in the 55M (8th), freshman Rachel D'Amora in the 200M (7th), junior Lisa McIsaac (3rd) and freshman Meghan Andrade (8th) in the 1000M, sophomore Nicole Portley in the 5000M (3rd), junior Kate Sullivan in the 55M hurdles (4th), junior Kristyn O'Brien in the pole vault (tied for 7th), freshman Christina Regan in both the triple jump (8th) and the pentathlon (3rd).
All four relay teams also scored for the Eagles. The 2x200M team earned sixth place with its 1:45.60. The 4x400M team took fifth place with its 3:59.95. The 4x800M group ran to a second-place finish with a 9:18.74 and the distance medley team took third place with their 12:05.94.
The next meet for the Eagles will be the annual ECAC competition held at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston, Mass. on March 4 and 5. Those athletes who have posted qualifying marks and times will be entered in the meet.
