Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Junior forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y.) earned HOCKEY EAST Player of the Week honors for the week ending Feb. 21 after tallying his seventh career hat trick during a 4-1 win over New Hampshire on Feb. 20.
Gionta, who also earned Player of the Week honors on Jan. 17 and was the league's Player of the Month for December, scored the Eagles' first three goals, including a spectacular end-to-end rush in the third period that put the game away.
The hat trick was Gionta's second of the year and the seventh of his career, leaving him one short of the school record shared by Ray Chaisson (1939-41), Warren Lewis (1947-50), and Scott Harlow (1982-86). Gionta now has 41 points - 25 goals and 16 assists - in 30 games this season, including 22 goals and nine assists in his last 20 games.
Gionta and the Eagles (20-9-1) will be back in action this weekend when they face UMass-Amherst in a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26).
