Tow Wins Princeton Tennis Invitational

Junior Cynthia Tow won the Princeton Invitational held this weekend on the Ivy League school's campus, with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Priya Bhupathi of Princeton University.
The win marked Tow's third of the year and the match was her fifth final of the year while improving her overall record on the season to 22-3. She currently is ranked 73rd in the country in the February 16 edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Wingspan.com Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Tow, the tournament's second seed, earned a spot in the finals by defeating Shubha Srinivasan of the University of Pennsylvania, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Tow cruised through the first round, defeating a player from Princeton 7-5, 6-0. In the second round, she dropped a set to Sarita Yardi before taking the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. She then topped Gailor Large from Princeton 6-2, 6-0, in the quarterfinals to set up the match against Srinivasan.
Junior Kiren Fernando advanced to the semifinals where she fell to Bhupathi on her way to the finals, 6-4, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Fernando defeated Kavitha Krishnamurthy of Princeton, the tournament's top seed and ranked 14th in the country, when she defaulted with an injury.
Other Eagles competed in the Princeton Invitational. Junior Barbara Privrel fell in the opening round, then moved to the consolation bracket where she won one match before bowing. Sophomore Ruta Vietas also fell in the first round, then also dropped her opening match in the consolation round.
In doubles play, the tandem of Tow and Vietas advanced to the semifinals of the bracket, falling to the top-seeded pair of Amanda Hastings-Phillips and Large, 9-7. The pair of Fernando and Privrel fell in the opening round to a team from Old Dominion University, then were tripped up in the opening round of the consolation bracket, 8-6, by a team from Princeton.
The women's tennis team will next compete March 9 when the team travels to Miami for a dual match against the Hurricanes.
