Women's Ice Hockey Falls To Harvard

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Tammy Shewchuk scored four goals and added five assists to help #2 Harvard defeat Boston College 9-1 Saturday in Chestnut Hill. With today's victory, the Crimson improved to 14-3-3 and 12-3-3 in the ECAC. BC dropped to 1-17-1 in the loop and 5-18-1 overall.
Shewchuk contributed to all of Harvard's scoring plays. She fed teammate Jennifer Botterill twice. Botterill also assisted one goal. The duo's third linemate, Kalen Ingram, also scored twice for the Crimson while adding four assists. Defensewomen Jamie Hagerman accounted for Harvard's other tally. Angela Ruggiero posted four assists for Harvard. Angie Francisco and Christie Mackinnon each added an assist.
In all three periods, the Crimson scored within the first 36 seconds (25, 31, 36). Harvard also converted two of its three power-play opportunities and outshot the Eagles 47-27.
Jane Jorge (Allston, Mass.) spoiled HU's shutout plans. The sophomore registered her goal past Harvard goaltender Alison Kuusisto with 10 seconds left in the game. Kristin Campbell (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Heather Lane (Clinton, N.Y.) assisted on that goal.
HU's starting goaltender Crystal Springer held BC scoreless through two periods, garnering 19 saves. Kuusisto added seven in the final period. The Eagles' Sharon VanTuyl (Portage, Mich.) made 22 saves in 34 minutes. Freshman Heather Cohen (Concord, Mass.), who relieved VanTuyl at 14:19 in the second period, made 15 stops.
BC hosts the top-ranked squad in the nation, Brown, Sunday (Feb. 13). Game time is 3 p.m.
