CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Two Boston College forwards earned HOCKEY EAST accolades for their play during November. Senior Brian Gionta (Rochester, NY) earned Player of the Month honors, and freshman Chuck Kobasew (Osoyoos, British Columbia) garnered Rookie of the Month honors, leading BC to a 6-2 record and first place in the HOCKEY EAST standings.
On a single play, in the Eagles' 7-2 win over Merrimack on Nov. 21, Gionta provided another exclamation point to his collegiate career, scoring his 100th career goal, tying a school record with his eighth career hat trick, and simultaneously establishing a new HOCKEY EAST record for the fastest two goals by one player at 10 seconds. Gionta tallied eight goals and three assists during the month. The senior captain also scored two short-handed goals and two power-play goals during the month.
Kobasew has tallied a team-leading four game-winning goals, including a dramatic overtime goal at Harvard on Nov. 25. He also shares the team lead with four power-play goals. For the month the forward registered 10 points on five goals and five assists. Among HOCKEY EAST scoring leaders, Kobasew ranks third in conference games, and seventh overall. He is the league's top freshman scorer.
Boston College freshmen swept the Rookie of the Week award for the month, a feat which had not been accomplished by one conference team since the 1992-93 season, when Maine had four straight Rookie of the Week honorees.
The Eagles were a perfect 6-0 in November in games in which both Gionta and Kobasew scored, and 0-2 in games in which neither registered a point.
The third-ranked Eagles (11-3-0) return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 6, when they travel to Northeastern to take on the Huskies in a conference matchup. The Eagles then travel to Orono, Maine to face off against the Black Bears on Saturday, Dec. 10. Game time for both contests is 7 p.m.
