
Cross Country Finishes Fourth at NCAA Championships

AMES, Iowa--Boston College women's cross country team collected 214 points to finish in fourth place at the NCAA Championship, today, in Ames, Iowa. The fourth place finish by the Eagles marks the highest finish for both the women's cross country team at the NCAA Championship and any Boston College women's varsity team in any sport. The record was previously held by the 1997 women's cross country team when they finished ninth.
Leading the sixth nationally ranked Eagles, for the sixth time this season, was sophomore Maggie Guiney (Red Bank, N.J.). Maggie Guiney finished in 13th place with a time of 21:05. Next for Boston College finished junior captain Katie Ryan (Elmira, N.Y.). Ryan took 24th with a time of 21:17. Seven seconds later (21.24) sophomore Cate Guiney (Red Bank, N.J.) ran to a 34th place finish.
Receiving cross country All-American honors were Maggie Guiney, Katie Ryan and Cate Guiney. The top 30 American finishers receive the honor. Cate Guiney took the 30th spot for All-American honors, with four non-Americans finishing in the top 30 of the race.
In 97th place, freshman Jen Kramer (Loudonville, N.Y) finished with a time of 21.57. Rounding out the scoring for the Eagles was sophomore Julie Spolidoro (Duxbury, Mass.) in 120th place with a time of 22.07. The sixth and seventh runners for Boston College were junior Sharon VanTuyl (Portage, Mich.) and injured sophomore Laura Smith (Holden, Mass.).
Finishing in first out of 31 teams, with 117 points, was Colorado, who as of Nov. 12, was ranked first in the FinshLynx national poll. 200 runners competed at today's NCAA Championship.
The Eagles qualified on Saturday, Nov. 11th when they won the NCAA Northeast Regional Qualifier, giving them an automatic berth into today's race.
Going into the NCAA Championship, Boston College ranked sixth nationally by the FinishLynx Division I Cross Country National Poll on Nov. 12, 2000. To start the season the Eagles were selected as preseason 24th by the FinsihLynx poll.
At the NCAA Championship in 1999, the women's cross country team finished in 28th place out of 31 teams. In 1997 the cross country team took ninth place, giving them the highest finish by any Boston College women's varsity team, in any sport.
Today's race concluded the women's cross country team's 2000 season, marking it as the best in school history.
