Byars Named BIG EAST Co-Player Of The Week

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Rachel Byars was named BIG EAST women's basketball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 19. After career performances in Eagles' two games in the Chevrolet Classic hosted by Michigan State this weekend, the transfer swing-player received her first league award in a Boston College uniform. She shared the honor with Syracuse's Beth Record.
The native of Morganfield, Ky., netted a career-high 21 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the first round game against Tennessee Tech which the Eagles won, 80-64. In the championship game against the host Spartans, she reset her career-high in points, registering 27 points and again pulling down 11 boards. Starting both games, she also had six assists in the second game and eight in the two contests. She played the full 40 minutes in both games.
Boston College won the championship with a 63-61 win over Michigan State as Byars was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. With 1.5 seconds remaining in the game and the score tied at 61-61, Byars was fouled and netted two free throws to win the title for the Eagles.
A transfer from Western Kentucky University, Byars is starting her first season at the Heights after sitting out the 1999-2000 season.
The Boston College women's basketball team is currently ranked 22nd in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' poll and 24th in the Associated Press poll with a 2-0 record. The team opens up its home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 22 against third-ranked Duke in a 7 p.m. contest in Conte Forum.
