With a third-place finish and a home-field first round berth in the BIG EAST tournament on the line, the Boston College men's soccer team defeated the visiting Georgetown Hoyas, 1-0, at the Newton Campus Soccer Fields. Sophomore Bobby Thompson scored the clinching goal in the 14th minute to give the Eagles their second-highest ever win total in a BIG EAST season. Boston College was selected ninth in the preseason BIG EAST Coaches' Poll.
Thompson's goal was the result of a fine passing play. Junior Chris Cleary dribbled the ball down the right sideline to the top of the goal box and put a through pass on senior Jorgen Lie's feet at the top of the box in the center of the field. He fed a charging Thompson down the baseline for the score. The goal was Thompson's second of the season.
The Eagles were looking to add a second tally to the board in the 53rd minute, when off a corner serve by Lie, sophomore Casey Schmidt headed the ball into the crossbar. The Hoyas were looking to even the score just minutes later, when Tony Soric put a perfect shot up just under the crossbar, but senior goalkeeper Chris Hamblin made a giant leaping save to preserve the win.
Hamblin finished the game with eight saves and his seventh shutout of the season, while Georgetown keeper Brian O'Hagan made six saves in the loss.
The Eagles, now 8-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the BIG EAST, will next face Brown on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 2 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field. The Eagles will host a BIG EAST tournament quarterfinal game on Sunday, Nov. 5, at 12 p.m. Their opponent will be determined this weekend in the final games of BIG EAST play.
