The Boston College men's soccer defense withstood 12th-ranked St. John's and held the Red Storm scoreless through regulation and kept Boston College in the game despite being outshot 10-1 in regulation, but could not hold off the team's pressure entirely, falling 1-0 in the 99th minute of play. The game, played on Astroturf rather than natural grass, was the Eagles' third-straight game against a top-15 opponent. Angel Rodriguez netted the deciding goal on a cross from Gorgui Mbaye. Rodriguez set himself up at the far post and put the ball in past senior Eagle keeper Chris Hamblin for the win.
Boston College was held to just one shot in the game - by freshman Ramon Smith - and was called for 11 fouls to St. John's 8. Hamblin did not see any other shots besides the goal. St. John's keeper Jeffrey Stoklosa made the save on Smith's shot for the shutout.
With the loss, the Eagles' record evens at 6-6-1 and 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play. St. John's improved to 10-3-2 and 7-2-1 in league contests. Boston College next faces 22nd-ranked Syracuse on the road on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
