PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston College women's tennis team was spectactular this past weekend at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I., as senior co-captain Cynthia Tow captured the flight A singles title and three of the Eagles' four doubles teams nabbed the championships in their respective flights.
Tow dropped only two sets during the entire tournament en route to downing crosstown-rival BU's Christina Causway 5-7, 6-1, 10-4 for her first individual title of the season.
The Eagles found drew greatest triumphs, though, in the doubles portion of the tourney. Tow teamed up with fellow senior co-captain Kiren Fernando to capture the flight A doubles title. Again the Eagles had to overcome a strong challenge by their Commonwealth Avenue rivals as the Tow/Fernando tag-team was forced into extra points to defeat the Terriers 9-8 in their first-round matchup. The duo cruised the rest of the way to the trophy, though, taking out Cornell 8-4 in the semis and Princeton 8-3 in the finals. Junior Ruta Veitas and freshman Alison Ashley cruised to the flight B doubles title, defeating Cornell in the finals 8-5. Flight D saw sophomore Anisha Fernando and sophomore walk-on Brooke Moldenhauer march to the title with an 8-5 victory over a duo from host Brown.
The Eagles will next see action when they divide next weekend with some of the team's members participating at the Dartmouth Invitational, and others at the All-America Individual Tournament in Los Angeles.
