The Crimson's Ryan Kelly netted the game's lone goal as the Harvard University men's soccer team defeated Boston College, 1-0, at Ohiri Field. The loss marked the Eagles' third loss of the season - and third 1-0 loss of the season - which lowered their record to 5-3 overall.
The teams played to a 0-0 deadlock at the intermission, but the Crimson controlled play. Though both teams had six shots on goal by the half, Harvard allowed only a handful of Boston College rushes while applying heavy pressure through the midfield.
Kelly's goal, which came just after the second half began play - in the 47th minute - as he beat his defender and put the ball past Eagle senior per Chris Hamblin. It was the first non-penalty kick goal Hamblin had allowed since the first goal in the Boston University game on Sept. 3, a period of over 525 minutes spanning seven games.
Boston College had three key chances in the second half, two by sophomore Casey Schimdt. The first was off a pass from the right wing to an open Schimdt who had an open net behind Crimson keeper Dan Mejras, who was down. As Schimdt sent the ball toward the net, Mejras made a diving stop from point-blank range. The second opportunity came when Schmidt was again sent in on the right wing and had Mejras one-on-one, but the keeper came out and made a tackle save on Schmidt to preserve the 1-0 lead. The third scoring chance amid a heavy Eagle attack sent Kevin Boyd and Chris Cleary in on net as they beat their defenders, but Mejras was again up to the task and held on to keep the score at 1-0.
Mejras made five saves in the win, all in the second half, and Hamblin stopped three in the loss.
Boston College next travels to Dartmouth on Wednesday, Oct. 4 for a non-conference tilt against the Big Green at 3 p.m.
