Senior forward Mark McLennan scored the game's only goal and his Gold teammates won two points in the Skills competition as the Gold won the team's annual intra-squad scrimmage, 3-0, at Kelley Rink.
Senior Scott Clemmensen earned the shutout for the Gold, while sophomores Tim Kelleher and Tom Egan split the goaltending duties for the Maroon.
"I was very happy with the scrimmage. I thought both teams played hard," head coach Jerry York said. "Both defensive units played well, especially the three goaltenders."
After a scoreless first half, McLennan took a pass from freshman Justin Dziama and slipped the puck past Egan with 7:46 to play in the game.
In the Skills competition, senior captain Brian Gionta won the "fastest skater" honor. Gionta defeated senior Marty Hughes in the quarterfinal round, sophomore Krys Kolanos in the semifinals, and senior Rob Scuderi in the final round. Scuderi advanced to the championship round by defeating senior Mike Lephart and freshman J.D. Forrest.
The shootout competition pitted five skaters from each side against one another. Gold tallied three goals, while Maroon netted one goal. Seniors Dan Sullivan, Bobby Allen and McLennan scored for the winning team. Sophomore Bill Cass was the lone Maroon skater to score.
Gold earned one point for Gionta's fast-skating victory and another point for the shootout win.
Notes: Four former Eagle stars served as honorary coaches in the annual game. Tom Martin '61 and John McNamara '86 led the Gold, while Joe Morgan '52 and Michael Spalla '94 coached the Maroon ... Freshman defenseman Joe Schuman watched the game from the bench area. Schuman returned to campus earlier in the day after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee back in Minnesota on Thursday (Sept. 28).
