Chestnut Hill, Mass. ? Senior forward Jeff Farkas and junior forward Brian Gionta were both honored by HOCKEY EAST, with Farkas earning Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending Jan. 2 and Gionta being named the conference?s Player of the Month for December.
Farkas tallied five goals and three assists during Boston College?s three wins last week, and he became the 12th player in school history to score five goals in one game when he accomplished the feat in a 5-4 win over Vermont (Dec. 30). He also had two assists in a 6-1 win over Dartmouth on Dec. 29.
Farkas? play in those two games earned him Most Valuable Player honors at the Sheraton/Howard Bank Hockey Classic in Burlington, Vt., where the Eagles won the tournament championship. Farkas added one assist during a 6-2 home victory over Brown on Jan. 2.
Gionta scored four goals and added four assists as Boston College swept all four of its December games. The junior scored one goal in a 4-0 win over Merrimack on Dec. 7, then added one assist in a 3-0 victory over Harvard on Dec. 10.
At the Sheraton/Howard Bank Hockey Classic, Gionta posted his sixth career hat trick in the win over Dartmouth and capped off the month with a three-assist effort during the Eagles? victory over Vermont. Gionta earned all-tournament honors for his play as Boston College won their first holiday tournament since the 1988-89 season.
Farkas currently leads the Eagles, as well as all HOCKEY EAST players, in scoring with 30 points ? 15 goals and 15 assists. Gionta is second on the team and third in the league with 23 points ? 10 goals and 13 assists. He is currently working on a six-game scoring streak, having posted seven goals and six assists during that stretch. All six of those games have been Eagle wins.
