BOSTON (AP) - The Seton Hall players understand there are more important things than basketball. They hope in some small way they can make a difference.
Playing their first game since an on-campus dormitory fire killed three students Jan. 19, the Pirates continued their best start in seven years with a 74-65 victory over Boston College on Wednesday night.
"It'll never make it better, but at least it might help a little," said Pirates guard Shaheen Holloway, who scored 15 points. "I hope it helped a little."
Darius Lane, who led Seton Hall with 21 points, said it was an emotional game for the Pirates (13-3, 5-1 Big East).
"Everybody on campus has been watching us play, and rooting for us," he said. "We just wanted to come out and play for the school and do it for ourselves."
"This was a big win for us," senior forward Gary Saunders said. "We've never won the first three road games in the history of Seton Hall."
Troy Bell and Xavier Singletary each had 15 points for the Eagles (9-9, 1-5), who lost their fifth straight.
After the Eagles tied the game 45-45 on Bell's 3-pointer with 12:39 to go, the Pirates went on an 11-0 run. Holloway started the spree with a driving basket and two free throws and Lane added a 3-pointer.
Boston College closed the gap to 64-60 on Kenny Walls' basket with just over three minutes left, but couldn't get any closer.
Following the Eagles' run, Holloway hit a free throw and Lane banked in a 3-pointer from the corner.
BC coach Al Skinner said his team lost its focus defensively during Seton Hall's runs.
"I thought we were a little confused with what were supposed to do and that confusion cost us," Skinner said. "We've got to concentrate on what we want on defense."
The Eagles, who led 35-30 at halftime, took a 40-32 lead on Bell's steal and breakaway jam 1:39 into the second half. But the Pirates scored the next eight points, tying it on Holloway's fastbreak layup.
