CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Lisa Molvar (Lexington, Mass.) scored the game-deciding goal to help Boston College defeat visiting Maine 2-1 Saturday in Kelley Rink. BC improved to 5-11-1, earning its first victory in the ECAC (1-11-1), while dropping the Black Bears to 4-13-0 overall and 1-13-0 in the loop.
Lisa Molvar got an assist from Gen Richardson (Monroe, Conn.) to send an off-balanced shot from the left circle into the net for the 2-1 edge at 15:49 in the second period. Over a minute earlier, Maine's Christina Hedges (Rochester, Mass.) evened the score at one, bringing the puck from behind BC's net to sweep it through the legs of BC goaltender Sharon VanTuyl (Portage, Mich.). Nicole Munro (Seaforth, Ontario) had an assist on that goal.
The Eagles had chances late in the game. Maine's Dawn Froats (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan), who made 11 saves overall, stopped Molvar's high bullet at 17:30 with a two-on-one opportunity for the Eagles. BC center Jane Jorge (Allston, Mass.) was tripped from behind by Tracy Caridade (Sudbury, Ontario) on an empty net goal opportunity with 47 seconds left in the game.
At 4:25 in the first period, Jen Buckley (Greenwich, Conn.) started the game's scoring with an unassisted goal on a breakaway. That marked the eighth consecutive contest that the junior captain has contributed at least one point in a game. Lisa Molvar's tally was her ninth on the season.
The Black Bears outshot the Eagles 24-13. BC was scoreless in three power-play opportunities, and Maine could not convert its only chance with a man advantage.
