
Hockey Skates Past UMass-Lowell, 6-2

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Senior Blake Bellefeuille scored two goals to lead Boston College past UMass-Lowell before a crowd of 5,873 at Conte Forum Friday night in HOCKEY EAST action. Boston College scored four goals in the second period to secure the victory and improve to 12-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in HOCKEY EAST play. UMass-Lowell fell to 5-15-1 overall and 2-9-1 in league action.
Bellefeuille started the scoring when he fed a pass from junior Brian Gionta past River Hawk goaltender Cam McCormick at 6:19 of the first period. Senior Mike Mottau also had an assist on the goal, which broke two Boston College scoring records: Tom "Red" Martin's mark for most career assists by a defenseman and Tom Mellor's record for most career points by a defenseman.
Senior Jeff Farkas scored the first of Boston College's four second period goals when he notched a power-play goal at 7:21 to give the Eagles a 2-0 edge. His goal was his 16th of the season. Juniors Bobby Allen and Rob Scuderi assisted on the play.
UMass-Lowell cut the Boston College lead to one when Kevin Bertram tallied a power-play goal from Chris Bell and Ed McGrane at 8:45. Boston College junior Marty Hughes scored his second goal of the year to make the score 3-1 on a pass from senior Kevin Caulfield, just 31 seconds later at 9:16. Freshman Krys Kolanos notched his second goal of the year on a pass from junior Mike Lephart and sophomore Jeff Giuliano at 12:37.
Bertram again scored at 14:46 to bring the River Hawks within two goals on a feed from Yorick Treille and John Campbell.
Boston College scored the final two goals to put the game out of reach. Bellefeuille's second goal of the game and 10th of the season came at 19:10 of the second period (from Allen and Mottau) and Gionta recorded his 13th of the year at 2:02 of the third (from junior goaltender Scott Clemmensen).
Clemmensen made 22 saves in the win and McCormick recorded the loss with 19 saves. Dan Weinrieb also played 8:10 for the Riverhawks, stopping two shots.
Boston College will next play on Sunday, January 16 when they face Yale of the ECAC in New Haven, Conn. at 7 p.m.
