Eagles Look To Extend Nine-Game Winning Streak

CHESTNUT HILL - Boston College enters Wednesday's game with a 13-3 overall record and currently has the longest winning streak in school history with nine consecutive victories. The Eagles are ranked No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, and No. 25 in the Associated Press poll. Boston College is 2-0 in BIG EAST Conference action with wins over Villanova (65-55) on December 8 and Syracuse (71-62) on January 9. The Eagles winning streak started on December 4 with an 83-70 victory over Kent State and includes six victories at Conte Forum. Boston College won the State Farm Classic at Gainesville, Florida on December 29, 1999. The Eagles played six of their first seven games on the road, faced three teams ranked among the Top 25, and registered a 3-3 record.
St. John's enters Wednesday's game with a 5-7 record. The Red Storm is 0-2 in BIG EAST Conference action after losing to Georgetown (61-52) on December 9 and Pittsburgh (64-57) on January 5. St. John's opened the season winning two of the first three games, but lost three consecutive contests in December to fall to 2-4 overall. The Red Storm had a three-game winning streak snapped with a loss to Florida State on December 29 and enter the game against Boston College with a three-game losing streak. Two players are averaging double figures in scoring led by sophomore guard Giani Bowles' 13.4 points per game. Sophomore forward Aiysha Smith leads St. John's in rebounding with 8.9 per game. Darcel Estep, currently in her first year as the head coach at St. John's, has a career record of 40-56. Estep led Morgan State to a 35-49 record in three years as head coach.

EAGLES vs. RED STORM: Boston College and St. John's have played 33 games, and the Eagles lead the series, 22-11. Boston College has won the last seven meetings, including one victory last season. The Eagles defeated St. John's, 64-60, on January 31, 1999. St. John's last win in the series was on February 1, 1995, when the Red Storm defeated Boston College, 90-75, in Chestnut Hill.
LAST MEETING (1/31/99): Becky Gottstein and Alissa Murphy each scored 20 points as No. 22 Boston College defeated St. John's, 64-60, on January 31, at Jamaica, NY. Gottstein, who also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, hit two free throws with 15.6 seconds left to give the Eagles a 61-60 lead. Danielle O'Banion added a free throw and two more by Murphy sealed the win with three seconds remaining.
Giani Bowles scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half to give St. John's a 32-31 lead at halftime. Gottstein led the Eagles in the first half with 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Red Storm led Boston College for the first five minutes of the second half, but a jumper by Murphy gave the Eagles a 41-40 lead at the 13:09 mark. Murphy scored six points in a 15-3 spurt that gave the Eagles a 48-40 lead with 11:02 to play. Boston College would increase its lead to 10 points, before St. John's would make a run.
Ebony Dickinson scored 11 of her 20 points for St. John's in a 15-4 run that gave the Red Storm a one-point lead with 54 seconds remaining.

Syracuse connected on seven three-point field goals and shot 45.5 percent in the first half. Bouchard opened the Boston College scoring with a three-point basket to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead, but Syracuse scored eight consecutive points, including back-to-back three-pointers, to take a seven-point lead. The Orangewomen led throughout the first half and held a 39-31 advantage with :15 remaining. Bouchard's three-point basket with :02 left cut the Syracuse lead to 39-34 at intermission.
The Eagles held Syracuse to 27.3 percent (9-33) shooting in the second half. Boston College opened the second half with six straight points from Gottstein to tie the game at 40-40 at the 18:05 mark. Syracuse went on a 6-0 run, but the Eagles battled back and took the lead on a Cournoyer layup with 9:36 remaining in the game. Boston College increased its lead to 11-points and connected on six-of-10 free throws in the final minute to secure the win. Syracuse was led by Beth Record's 19 points.

MISC. NOTES FROM SYRACUSE WIN: Cal Bouchard led the Eagles to the victory with one of her top performances of the season. The senior captain scored a season-high 28 points (10-16 FG, 4-7 3-pt FG, 4-7 FT), in 40 minutes. Bouchard also pulled down a season-high six rebounds and tied her season-high of five assists...Jamie Cournoyer was one rebound short of registering her first double-double of the season. The junior center scored 13 points and led the Eagles with a season-high nine rebounds...Becky Gottstein scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half to help secure the victory. The sophomore forward was held to only four points (1-5 FG, 2-2 FT) and two rebounds in the first half...Freshman Alicia Shields grabbed a career-high five rebounds...The backcourt tandem of Bouchard and Alissa Murphy played all 40 minutes and Cournoyer registered a season-high 36 minutes.
INJURY UPDATE: Brianne Stepherson missed the game at Syracuse with a muscle spasm in her neck. The sophomore point guard's condition has improved and her status will be determined after an evaluation on Wednesday morning.
COURNOYER STARTS IN FRONTCOURT: Nicole Conway started in the frontcourt at Syracuse on January 9, for the first time this season. An injury to Brianne Stepherson forced a change in the lineup that gave Conway her 18th career start. Cal Bouchard was moved to point guard and Alissa Murphy completed the backcourt tandem. Becky Gottstein, Jamie Cournoyer, and Conway completed the starting lineup. Conway started 17 games last season and averaged 6.9 points and 3.4 rebounds.
500 REBOUNDS: Alissa Murphy is on pace to become the sixth Boston College player to score 1,000 points and register 500 rebounds during her career. The senior guard became a member of the 1,000-point club on December 12, 1999, after scoring a season-high 23 points against Dartmouth. Murphy currently has 467 career rebounds.
COACHING MILESTONE: A victory on Wednesday would mark Cathy Inglese's 100th win as head coach at Boston College. She currently has a 99-84 record in seven seasons with the Eagles, and has a career record of 219-158.

HOME SWEET HOME: The Eagles are 7-0 in games played at Conte Forum this season after defeating Davidson (86-54), Kent State (83-70), Villanova (65-55), Dartmouth (88-52), Northwestern (86-55), LaSalle (80-66), and Holy Cross (66-42), and currently have a nine-game home winning streak. Boston College's streak dates back to February 17, 1999, when the Eagles defeated Villanova (64-39).

GOTTSTEIN- PLAYER OF THE WEEK #3: Becky Gottstein was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on January 2, marking the third time this season that she has won the award. The sophomore forward earned the award after being named MVP at the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. Gottstein registered double-doubles in both games at the tournament and shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the field.
Gottstein earned her first BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week award on November 22 after averaging 13 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games for the Eagles. The sophomore forward scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory over Maine on November 15. Gottstein registered her first double-double of the season in the loss to No. 3 Georgia, netting 14 points and adding 11 rebounds.
She also was named BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week on December 13. The sophomore forward averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds in Boston College's victories over Villanova and Dartmouth. Gottstein scored 23 points (8-11 FG, 7-7 FT) and grabbed 15 rebounds in the victory over Villanova and netted 17 points (8-14 FG, 1-1 FT) and pulled down nine rebounds in the win over Dartmouth.
TOURNAMENT CHAMPS: Boston College won the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla., after defeating Maine (81-54) on December 28 in the first round and Florida (66-61) on December 29 in the championship tilt. The Eagles victory over Florida marked only the second time in tournament history that the Gators did not win the annual classic. In 1991, Stephen F. Austin defeated Florida to take the title. Becky Gottstein's MVP award also marked only the second time that a Lady Gator did not win the tournament's top honor. Stephen F. Austin's Deneen Parker won the honor in 1991.
TOURNAMENT MVP: Becky Gottstein notched two double-doubles in the two Boston College wins at the State Farm Classic and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The sophomore forward scored 18 points (6-11 FG, 6-7 FT) and pulled down 12 rebounds against Maine in the first round victory. Gottstein added 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the championship game against Florida.
MURPHY'S ALL-TOURNEY HONORS: Alissa Murphy was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 19.0 points in the victories over Maine and Florida at the State Farm Classic. The senior guard led all scorers against Maine with 22 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 3-pt. FG, 7-7 FT). Murphy played all 40 minutes against Florida, tallied 16 points, connecting on 10-of-13 attempts from the line, and grabbed seven rebounds.
NCAA STAT LEADERS: Alissa Murphy and Becky Gottstein were listed among the nation's statistical leaders through games of January 3. Murphy was 20th in free throw percentage (87.7), after connecting on 64-of-73 attempts. Boston College was 18th in the nation in free throw percentage (74.9). Gottstein was 23rd in the nation in rebounding with an average of 10.1 per game.
CHARITY STRIPE: Boston College is currently leading the BIG EAST Conference in free throw percentage (73.8), and is 18th in the nation, after connecting on 248-of-336 attempts from the line. Alissa Murphy leads the team in free throw percentage (87.2), followed by Nicole Conway (83.3), Jamie Cournoyer (80.6), and Cal Bouchard (80.0).
Murphy has been perfect from the line in eight games, including the victory at Maine on November 15, connecting on all 12 free throw attempts. A year ago, she led the BIG EAST, and was third in the nation in free throw percentage (89.0). Murphy was perfect from the line in 14 games last season. Bouchard has been perfect from the line in seven games this season.
BALANCED SCORING: Three of the Boston College starters are currently averaging double figures in scoring. Senior Cal Bouchard leads the team with 15.3 points per game, followed by Becky Gottstein (13.0), and Alissa Murphy (12.8).
FORCE ON THE PERIMETER: The Eagles are currently shooting 35.0 percent (72-206) from three-point range and have a number of players that are a threat on the perimeter. Cal Bouchard is fifth in the BIG EAST Conference, shooting 43.6 percent (41-94). Alissa Murphy is shooting 34.6 percent (18-52), followed by Danielle O'Banion (36.4). Brianne Stepherson has connected on seven-of-26 attempts (26.9) from three-point range this season. The sophomore point guard connected on five-of-six attempts in the victory over LaSalle on December 22.
EAGLES ON THE ROAD: Boston College is 6-3 in games played away from Conte Forum this season. The Eagles played six of their first seven games on the road, and faced three teams ranked among the Top 25. In a span of 15 days, Boston College traveled to Maine, North Carolina, Illinois, and Arkansas, and returned with a road record of 3-3. The Eagles won both of their games at the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. on December 28-29. A year ago, the Eagles finished with a 9-5 record on the road.
EAGLES vs. RANKED TEAMS: Boston College is 1-2 against ranked teams this season after playing three teams in the Top 25 during the Preseason WNIT. The Eagles defeated No. 22 Duke (77-70) on November 17, but lost in the semifinals to No. 3 Georgia (78-70) and to No. 13 Illinois (73-42) in the consolation game.
The Eagles have only registered five wins ever over teams ranked in the Top 25. A year ago, Boston College defeated two teams in the Top 10 for the first time in school history. The Eagles upset No. 2 Connecticut (78-66) on January 23 and No. 7 Notre Dame (78-65) on December 30, 1998, at Chestnut Hill.
HEAD COACH CATHY INGLESE: Head coach Cathy Inglese is currently in her seventh season at the helm of the Boston College women's basketball program. Inglese arrived at Boston College in 1993 after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for seven seasons. In seven seasons at BC she has registered a record of 99-84, and has a career record of 219-158. Inglese led the 1998-99 team to a 22-8 record, the most successful in school history, and was voted BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year.
During her stint at Vermont, she became the winningest college basketball coach in the nation over the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. Inglese's teams were undefeated in regular-season play in both 1991-92 (29-0) and 1992-93 (28-0), and became the only Division I men's or women's team to have back-to-back perfect records. She earned District I Coach of the Year and North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, and was a National Coach of the Year finalist all three years. A 1980 magna cum laude graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Inglese was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

EAGLES IN THE POLLS: The Eagles are currently ranked No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, and No. 25 in the Associated Press poll. On November 22, 1999, the Eagles were ranked No. 18 in both polls, marking the highest ranking in school history.
A year ago, the Eagles climbed to their highest ranking of the season on February 1, 1999 when the team moved to No. 20. This season Boston College was ranked in both the preseason Associated Press (No. 19) and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls (No. 21) for the first time in school history.

1,000 POINTS: Alissa Murphy joined Cal Bouchard as a member of the 1,000-point club, after scoring a season-high 23 points in the victory over Dartmouth on December 12, 1999. Both seniors reached the 1,000-point plateau this season. Bouchard netted 11 points on November 19, 1999 against Davidson and became the 11th Boston College player to score 1,000 points.
BOUCHARD EARNS WEEKLY HONORS: Boston College has produced a BIG EAST Player of the Week four of the eight times that the honor has been awarded this season. Becky Gottstein has earned the award three times and Cal Bouchard was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on December 20 after scoring a season-high 25 points in the 86-55 win over Northwestern on December 19. The senior captain connected on seven-of-10 attempts from the field, including all five three-point field goal attempts, and was perfect from the line, connecting on all six attempts. In 28 minutes of play, Bouchard did not commit any turnovers.
STEPHERSON PUMPS IN 31 POINTS: Brianne Stepherson turned in the top performance of her collegiate career in the 80-66 win over LaSalle on December 22. The sophomore guard scored a career-high 31 points (9-15 FG, 8-10 FT), including a career-high five three-point field goals. Stepherson also handed out a season-high six rebounds and tied her season-high of two steals.
EAGLE CAPTAIN: Senior Cal Bouchard will serve as the captain for the Boston College women's basketball team during the 1999-2000 season.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Becky Gottstein, Alissa Murphy, and Kim Mackie have accounted for nine double-doubles this season. Murphy registered the first double-double of the season for Boston College on November 15 at Maine. The senior guard scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds in the victory over the Black Bears. Murphy recorded her second of the season against Dartmouth on December 12, with 23 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Gottstein has recorded double-doubles in six games. The sophomore forward had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia on November 21, and registered 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Illinois on November 22. Gottstein registered consecutive double-doubles against Kent State on December 4 (26 pts. and 16 rebs) and Villanova (23 pts., 15 rebs) on December 8. Gottstein notched two double-doubles in the two games at the State Farm Classic and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds against Maine on December 28 and added 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the championship game against Florida on December 29.
Mackie registered the first double-double of her career against Kent State with a career-high 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

FRONTCOURT DOMINATES: The trio of Becky Gottstein, Kim Mackie, and Alissa Murphy combined to score 32 of Boston College's 38 points in the first half of the 83-70 victory over Kent State on December 4. Both Gottstein and Mackie finished the game with double-doubles. Gottstein scored a career-high 26 points and tied her career-high of 16 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season and 10th of her career. Mackie netted a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Murphy tied her career-high of eight assists.
BIG EAST STAT LEADERS: A number of Eagles are listed among the statistical leaders in the BIG EAST Conference. Three starters were among the top 15 in scoring in the league through games of January 10. Cal Bouchard was 5th (15.3) in scoring, followed by Becky Gottstein (13th -13.0), and Alissa Murphy (14th-12.8). Gottstein leads the league in rebounding with an average of 9.8.

BENCH CONTRIBUTES IN DAVIDSON WIN: The players off of the bench accounted for 24 points and 17 rebounds in the 86-54 win over Davidson on November 19. Nicole Conway scored 10 points in the win over the Wildcats. All three freshmen made a strong contribution in the Eagles' third victory of the season. Alicia Shields played 21 minutes and registered five points, three rebounds, and two steals. Adriana Spears pulled down six rebounds, scored three points, and added two blocks in 18 minutes. Maureen Magarity played nine minutes and scored two points.
COURNOYER'S CAREER NIGHT: Jamie Cournoyer scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Eagles to a 77-70 victory at Duke on November 17. The junior center hit seven-of-11 shots from the field and was a perfect seven-of-seven from the line. Cournoyer also registered six rebounds and three blocked shots in her second start of the season.
PRESEASON WNIT: The Eagles finished fourth in the Preseason WNIT after defeating Maine (83-56) and No. 22 Duke (77-70) in the first two rounds, but losing in the semifinals to No. 3 Georgia (78-70) and the consolation game to No. 13 Illinois (73-42). Boston College played all four games on the road.
WNIT HONORS: Becky Gottstein was named to the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament team after averaging 12.5 points and 10.3 rebounds in the four games. The sophomore forward recorded two double-doubles, registering 14 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia, and 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Illinois. She netted 18 points in the victory over Maine.
PRESEASON ACCOLADES: Boston College was ranked in both the preseason Associated Press (No. 19) and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls (No. 21) for the first time in school history.
