BELMONT, Mass. -- Boston College's California connection was clicking on all cylinders as the men's soccer team won its first game of the year, 3-1 over Siena at the Belmont Hill School in Belmont, Mass. All three of the Eagles goals came from players hailing from the state of California.
Now 1-2 overall, the Eagles waited until the matchs 43rd minute to tally with highly-touted freshman Casey Schmidt (Newbury Park, Calif.) doing the honors. Schmidt took a cross from Chris Cleary (Milton, Mass.) and put the ball past Siena goalkeeper Andrew Sether to give the Eagles a 1-0 halftime lead.
The visitors from New York would tie the game 13 seconds into the second half on a penalty kick from David Martella.
Schmidt, a member of US Soccers U-18 player pool, would tally his second goal of the game and his career in the 55th minute, weaving his way past two Siena defenders.
Kevin Boyd (Del Mar, Calif.) capped the scoring, taking a feed from freshman Zach Bouchard six minutes after Schmidts tally to give Boston College a comfortable lead.
The Eagles return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 as they do battle with Patriot League opponent Army in a game scheduled to be played at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
