Hockey Elects Mottau As 1999-2000 Captain

CHESNUT HILL, Mass. -- Senior defenseman Mike Mottau (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) has been elected as Boston Colleges 1999-2000 ice hockey captain. Senior forward Blake Bellefeuille (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and junior forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) were chosen as assistant captains of the 1999-2000 squad.
Mottau, a two-time All-America selection who served as assistant captain of the 1998-99 team, enters his final season as the Eagles most experienced player (121 career games played). He has missed just two games while playing with Team USA in the IIHF World Junior Championship in Finland in December 1997/January 1998 -- since arriving at Boston College in the fall of 1996. Last winter, he tallied 42 points, while anchoring the Eagles defensive corps. He registered 39 assists, ranking him among the nations leaders.
Bellefeuille enters his senior season with 123 career points in 118 games. Last year, he recorded 49 points 24 goals and 25 assists -- in 43 games. He led the Eagles and ranked among the nations leaders with 13 power-play goals. Bellefeuille netted two goals in each of the teams HOCKEY EAST Tournament semifinal and title-game victories. He earned the tournaments MVP honor.
Gionta, who captured 1998-99 Titan All-America first team honors, led the Eagles in scoring last winter. He tallied 60 points 27 goals and 33 assists in 39 games. He missed four games while playing with Team USA in the IIHF World Junior Championship in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He enters his junior season with 122 collegiate points, putting him on pace to become Boston Colleges career scoring leader.
"Im very pleased that these three individuals will serve as our team captains this winter," Boston College head coach Jerry York said. "All three players are proven leaders on and off the ice."
Boston College finished the 1998-99 season with a 27-12-4 record, winning the HOCKEY EAST Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournaments "Frozen Four" for the second consecutive year.
